OUR HISTORY
Jesse’s Embers – A Des Moines Steakhouse Tradition Since 1963
Jesse’s Embers has been a Des Moines tradition since it opened in 1963 under the leadership of founder Jesse Roush. In its early days, it operated much like a supper club where guests brought their own liquor and the restaurant provided mixers, ice, and garnishes.
This created a warm and social atmosphere that became part of its charm. The menu focused on high quality steaks and fresh seafood cooked over an open flame grill, paired with simple but flavorful sides.

In 2007, longtime bartender Marty Scarpino and partner Deena Edelstein took ownership of Jesse’s Embers. Having spent years building relationships with guests and working alongside the staff, both were deeply connected to the restaurant and committed to keeping its traditions alive. They understood the importance of preserving not just the food, but the atmosphere and sense of community that had made Jesse’s Embers a favorite for generations.
They maintained the original recipes that guests had loved for decades, from perfectly grilled steaks to fresh seafood and classic sides. The cozy wood paneled dining room remained just as inviting as ever, offering the familiar comfort of a space where countless meals and memories had been shared. The warm and welcoming service style continued to be a hallmark, with staff greeting regulars by name and making new guests feel instantly at home. Under their leadership, Jesse’s Embers thrived as a place where tradition and hospitality came together, and where every visit felt like returning to an old friend.
In 2025, ownership passed to Carter Annett, a local restaurateur who shares a deep respect for the restaurant’s history. Annett has been hands on in learning the business, installing a new point of sale system, and reintroducing lunch service after it had been paused.
Guests have already noted his friendly presence in the dining room and his focus on carrying forward the quality, atmosphere, and community spirit that have kept Jesse’s Embers a Des Moines favorite for more than 60 years.
